Task 3 - Type Exploration and Application

INSTRUCTIONS

TASK 3 | TYPE EXPLORATION AND APPLICATION

Outline of this Project
With the knowledge and experience gained in the exercises and tasks, with the accumulated knowledge from the lectures and your own reading (library books and online sources), with the experience gained in the different software covered in the programme thus far, synthesise and apply the learning in the tasks to be mentioned. Allow the knowledge gained to guide and inform your decisions for the effective execution of your final task.

Requirements
Create a font that is intended to solve a larger problem or meant to be part of a solution in the area of your interest be it graphic design, animation, new media or entertainment design or any other related area not necessarily reflecting your specialisation. End result: a complete typeface generated (.ttf) + applications.

or

Explore the use of typeface in your area of interest, understand its existing relationship, identify areas that could be improved upon, explore possible solutions or combinations that may add value to the existing typeface. End result: a complete typeface generated (.ttf) + applications.

or

Experiment. For your idea to qualify as an experiment it must be novel and unique — working with material that might be 3- dimensional, digitally augmented, edible, unusual, typographic music video or fine art. End result: defined by student.

To be effective you will need to study your selected area, look at how type is used in the area and identify potential weaknesses or possible areas of further exploration or experimentation. You can then attempt to provide a creative solution or add value to an existing use.

The end outcome could be a designed font and its application in the form or format that it is intending to provide a solution for, or an designed font that adds value to an existing use, or an experimentative output that results in something novel and unique. The work can manifest into any kind of format related to the issue being solved or explored or experimented: animation, 3d, print, ambient, projection, movie title or game title, music video, use of different material etc.

Process of Work

1. Research & Create a Proposal Document
First, I'm truly lost as there are so many fonts that I so excited to do. To make clearly of which path & concept, I've come up with my own proposal.

There are 3 fonts reference which I've search is Rafeal font, Gemini font & Briar font. I would love to try to design this font type as previously my design style is cute and playful. This time I wanted to try different design type which is simplicity, clean which ways abit mystery feel.

The ideas became more clear as "Skincare" came up to my mind. I have huge interest and love to explore to try different brand of Skincare. Recently, I've found out 2 new Skincare brand design which is very similar of what I want to do for my font design and why I choose them as my inspiration of fonts.

Chucks Skincare brand as u can see from the picture ( The font seem minimalist and bring some kind of feel like be bold and be different as there are different colour combination and the creative font design combination of the packaging of skincare)
Chuck's is a Malaysia Skincare Brand by one of my favourite influencer which is Jane Chuck. This is what the founder said and why I decided to choose Chucks as one of my inspiration of fonts design. "Chuck's isn't just a beauty brand, but a space that provides you with tools that I hope will help you love yourself—and others, just a little more."

Next, is One Thing Skincare which is from Korea. Why I will choose One Thing as one of my inspiration is the Simplicity. I known One Thing is because I'm part of One Thing Part Time designer as this is my first time heard of the brand. Their Design of packaging, Poster and Webpage is so simplicity and minimalist as the font is so simple and no colour was added.

The both of Chuck's and One Thing Skincare design have huge contrast through their fonts, design, packaging, poster and styles. I would like to try something excitement is to make of the 2 font type of the Skincare brand into one Fonttype combination together.

Chucks - Rozha One

Besides that, I also did find others font which is similar on what I wanted to create

After explore & research, I start to draw out on a paper some of the Alphabet such as Capital A,B,C,D,E  and Small letter a,b,c,d,e

After hand drawing of the Alphabet, I decided not to draw all at the paper and decided to draw at Adobe illustrator with Pen tool & Curve tool.

Illustration
Firstly, I did not record all the Alphabet process on how I did my typeface/font. This is how I created my font with this method following on how I draw with Pen tool, Curve tool and Smooth tool to create a perfect typefaces/font.

3. Designing Process - Step 3
After creating all the fonts and after applying smooth tools in Adobe Illustrator, The fonts seem perfectly extremely professional ~ I use alot time on seeing on Youtube for tutorial how to use font lab 8 on doing perfect kerning and adjustment of fonts and here are how of the outcome and process I do on font lab 8

FEEDBACK

Week 11:
General feedback: The typefaces look interesting and the design look nice. Yet, mr.Vinod did comment on i need to think on what is the font purpose for? I have clear and nice ideas for my font design but there are no any meaning or purpose that make me create this font
Specific feedback: To think clear the purpose and why I create this font

Week 12:
General feedback: I didn't show Mr.vinod about my Typefaces/Font design as I'm still finalising my font at FONTLAB 8
Specific feedback: I heard the feedbacks given by Mr.Vinod for others as I will done my fontlab 8 well for Kerning of my
Typefaces/Font

REFLECTIONS
Experience
I had the chance to research on my typeface/font design and branding as well as learn about typography as part of this assignment. I'm especially interested in creating my own typeface/font which include to brand it out on social media and it is interesting.

Observation
The possibility of working on assignments with little limitations might make things enjoyable, but they can also be also challenging to me too . Especially while creating the typefaces that I need to be creative and be special and meaning for what am I doing for. When I design something and then later, after some time has passed, I look back at the design, it looks really bad that I always wanted my design to looked speciality that represent me much and not disappointment.

Findings
I've discovered that it's important for a typeface/font to be easy to remember when first sight of looking, simplify and creative is so important when it comes to match for everything. Being innovative to create a total new design that represents myself  is challenging as there are too many possibility. As for this task, I did learned and know about myself too.

Typography of System Design
Author: Kimberly Elam

Fig 1 Book Cover - Typography of System Design

Typographic organization has always been a complex system in that there are so many elements at play, such as hierarchy, order of reading, legibility, and contrast. In Typographic Systems, Kim Elam, author of our bestselling books, Geometry of Design and Grid Systems, explores eight major structural frameworks beyond the gridincluding random, radial, modular, and bilateralsystems. By taking the reader through exercises, student work, and professional examples, Elam offers a broad range of design solutions.
Once essential visual organization systems are understood the designer can fluidly organize words or images within a structure, combination of structures, or a variation of a structure. With clarity and substance, each systemfrom the structured axis to the nonhierarchical radial arrayis explained and explored so that the reader comes away with a better understanding of these intricate complex arrangements. Typographic Systems is the seventh title in our bestselling Design Briefs series, which has sold more than 100,000 copies worldwide.
